The United States of America was formed in 1776 by the unification of thirteen British colonies that declared their independence. The war for independence lasted until 1783 and ended with the victory of the colonists. In 1787, the US Constitution was adopted, and in 1791 - the Bill of Rights, which significantly limited the government's powers over citizens. In the 1860s, conflicts between the slave-owning southern and industrial northern states led to the beginning of a four-year civil war. The victory of the northern states saved the country from division and led to a widespread ban on slavery in the United States. After World War I, the United States finally abandoned the policy of isolationism and began to play an active role in world politics. In 1945, the United States withdrew from World War II as the first nuclear power and entered into a global confrontation with the Soviet Union that lasted until the late 1980s.

The United States currently has the world's largest economy ($ 14.2 trillion), a powerful military, including the largest navy, a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, and a founding member of the North Atlantic Alliance. The United States has the second largest total nuclear capability on Earth.
